In this trip, get the opportunity to ride through remote desert and through two wilderness areas. Also, pass near Big Horn peak as well.
Begin by exiting off of exit 81 (Salome Rd.) from the I-10 Westbound. Turn right and follow Salome Rd. for 9.5 miles and turn right onto Eagle Eye Rd. After 3.8 miles turn right onto W. Big Horn Rd. This is a dirt road and the best place to stage is off to the right somewhere near the beginning of the trail. Reset your trip odometer when you turn onto the road. At 0.4 miles continue south of a corral and turn left. As you ride the small, lightly used trail, you cross many washes including one at 1.3 miles. Bear right at 2.15 miles (left leads to Little Horn Rd. which is even less traveled). Cross another small wash at 2.4 miles. Bear right onto the more traveled road at 3.1 miles. Cross another wash at 4.3 miles and observe signs, you are in the Big Horn Mountain Wilderness area. Continue straight at 5.3 miles. Off to the right at 5.65 miles is a large windmill and corral, a neat place to stop and take a picture. The windmill, when we were there, was pumping water out of the ground still! The trail is now recognized as Aguila Rd, no longer Big Horn Rd. Drive over a small, man-made dam at 8.7 miles. Within the next few miles, you enter into the Hummingbird Springs Wilderness Area and at 9.4 miles you may choose to go either way. Author chose to go left because right dead ends close to Big Horn Peak. Zigzag through a wash at 12.45 miles. We turned around at about this point because of time and weather restraints. However, if you feel ambitious, you can continue riding all the way to the I-10. To do this, bear right onto Wickenburg Rd. at 13.1 miles. Turn sharp right and cross a wash and then turn right at 13.5 miles. Cross a large wash at 15.15 miles. Continue to the left of a corral at 15.9 miles and cross over the CAP at 21.7 miles. Finally turn right at 23.95 miles to end on Indian School Rd. If you are on quads you have to ride all the way back but it you are in a jeep, you can jump onto the I-10 from here.
The entire trip is 48 miles round trip to Indian School Rd. and back. If you do this, allow 4-5 hours. However, you may choose to do less and it also may take more time if you stop more. The trail (as of February 2009) is in lightly used condition. At some part of the trail, crypto bionic crust was growing on the side of the trail which takes years to form. Overall, this is a very scenic trip and offers nice views.
