Cinder Hills OHV Recreation Area is one of the most visited places by off-road enthusiasts in Arizona. With over 13,500 acres designated to the Recreation Area, it is the perfect place for OHV (Off Highway Vehicles) of all kinds. Cinder Hills gets its name from the nearby Cinder Cones which erupted 1000 or so years ago, and covered the ground with lava. Along with the lava, the Coconino National Forest surrounds the area making it a perfect riding spot. It is just 13 miles northeast of Flagstaff and can be reached via the US 89. There are two ways to enter the park, one on FR 776 and another on FR545 (Sunset Crater National Monument Road). Trails line the area and offer varying degrees of difficulty, from easy to hard. You get to ride through and around cinder cones, just stay on designated routes.
Glass containers are prohibited at the Cinder Hills OHV Recreation Area, and you must follow a set of rules and regulations. For example, riders under 18 must have a helmet, you must have a Forest Service approved spark arrester, and you are asked to drive with caution and respect to other off-roaders.
