One thing to know before taking this trail is that you must first either take the Backway to Crown King Trail or ride the Crown King Rd. Trail to Crown King. Once in Crown King, turn onto Main Street. You will cross over a short bridge and then turn right just before entering downtown. Also, make sure to ignore smaller roads which are usually private drives.
Gladiator Mine Trail takes you on a historic journey past multiple mines, some being, the Crowned King Mine, the Philadelphia Mine, and the Gladiator Mine just to name a few. If you have a lot of time on your hands, consider riding the full loop, which includes this trail and the Towers Mountain Trail.
To ride the Gladiator Mine Trail, continue right at 0.1 miles. To the left is the return of the Towers Mountain Trail. Stay to the right again at 0.6 miles. Bear left onto more traveled road at 0.7 miles as the road passes the Philadelphia Mine (which can be reached by bearing right at 0.95 miles. Bear right uphill at 1.35 miles. To the left is the Crowned King Mine, which is actually private property. You can however, walk a little ways down to take a picture but do not go any further! This is actually an active prospect. The road is now referred to as FR. 9239 A. Continue past a house on a hill and come to the War Eagle Mine at 2 ¾ miles. Turn left at 3.05 miles. Narrow road to the right leads to the Lincoln Mine. This road is now known as Del Pasco –Gladiator Rd. Stay straight at 3.1 miles or take the optional right to the Gladiator Mine. Bear right at 3.9 miles or stop just up the road to explore the remnants at the Del Pasco Mine. Just before this, you descend a fairly steep hill. Be careful of this when coming the other way. The Del Pasco still has standing buildings and is a great place to explore.
The description for this trail officially (according to us) ends here. However, if you made it to this point, it would be logical to ride back via the Towers Mountain Trail. If you don’t make it to this point though, take the way you came to get back, it is quicker.
The Gladiator Mine Trail is only 4 miles (one way) long but could take about 1-2hours! The trail is pretty rocky and climbs quite a bit. It has one very steep hill, so use caution. Also, this trail receives heavy snowfall and should not be attempted when there is snow on the ground. This snow also changes the conditions of the trail so watch out! If you have a full day, combine this trail with the Towers Mountain Trail and make a loop back to Crown King. This trail is really fun because it takes you on such a mining journey.
