Stoneman Lake trail is a great trail that takes you on a trip to Stoneman Lake, one of Arizona’s three natural lakes. Stoneman Lake lies in a depression which is thought to have been created by volcanic activity over 8 million years ago! Surrounded by beautiful pines, and with lots of wildlife, this trip allows you to get out and relax. This trail is easy and can be done in almost any vehicle, except during inclement weather. If you have a street legal quad or SUV, consider taking the extra trip to Hutch Mountain Lookout, which gives you amazing views of the surrounding area.
The start for this trail is located 46 miles south of Flagstaff. From the I-17, exit on Stoneman Lake Road. Follow this road for 6 miles and off to the left appears to be the best parking. Once unloaded, set out northeast and reset your trip odometer as the pavement ends.
At 0.2 miles, turn left onto Forest Service Road 213. At 2.2 miles, turn left onto Forest Service Road 665 then immediately right onto Forest Service Road 213A to access the day use area. Turn right at 2.8 miles to park and look at the lake. When you are done, head back to FS Rd. 213A and head west (to the east is private property, stay out). At 3.55 miles, you should be back to Stoneman Lake Rd (FS Rd. 213), turn left. To the left at 3.8 miles is a Picnic Area if you feel like relaxing some more. Stay straight at 5.2 miles and again at 5.45 miles. Ignore smaller road to the right at 6.35 miles. Stay right at 6.7 miles where other roads go left and straight. As you continue on, ignore smaller roads to the side, stay straight from here on out. At 9.7 miles, you reach Lake Mary Rd. If you don’t feel like driving up the road to Hutch Mountain lookout, or do not have a street legal OHV, you should turn back. Or if you’ve had enough, head back the way you came maybe exploring the numerous side trails in the area. If you feel like paying a visit to Hutch Mountain Lookout, reset your odometer and turn left onto Lake Mary Road. After 1.3 miles, turn right onto dirt road (there is a sign, so look out for that). Turn right at 2.7 miles, left at 3.95 miles and an immediate left at 4 miles. Follow FS Road 135B until it ends at 5.55 miles at Hutch Mountain Lookout.
The trail round trip (from start to finish at Lake Mary Road) is 19 miles round trip, not including the 11 mile round trip side trip to Hutch Mountain Lookout. Allow for about 2 hours for the main portion of this trip and add another 1 to 2 hours for side trips to Hutch Mountain Lookout and other side trips. Even if you do just the smaller portion of the trip not including Hutch Mountain, you will have a great time and see some amazing scenery!
